A couple weeks ago, NBC, ABC, and CBS aired a special entitled Stand Up To Cancer. Stand Up To Cancer is a charitable services fund of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and its purpose is to raise funds for what the campaign founders call “dream teams” of interdisciplinary and multi-institutional researchers. The founders believe that the scientific knowledge to beat cancer is there, but funding is preventing advancement from occurring.

Through their website the founders also hope to increase public knowledge of new treatments, early-detection and prevention strategies. You can find links to many cancer and research organizations. Their magazine also provides helpful information on everything from scientific breakthroughs and policy to personal stories from those who have been touched by the disease.

During the television special new treatments for cancer were mentioned. One in particular involved tracking the effectiveness of a certain breast cancer drug by monitoring the concentration of cells in the blood. The drug dosage and type of treatment would then be changed according to how the patient is responding. This type of treatment falls under the category of personalized medicine. While discussing personalized medicine, Daniel Perry, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Aging Research, states that “[Personalized medicine] has vast potential to improve healthcare, treatment, and quality of life for people of all ages.” Visit SAGE Crossroads to learn more.
